Mission Statement of the MSU HRPP Plan
The Michigan State University (MSU) human research protection program’s (HRPP) primary mission is the protection of individuals who are the subjects of research. MSU is committed to follow the ethical standards described in the Belmont Report, and all applicable federal, state and local regulations and university policies and procedures. The HRPP at MSU sets forth the structure, policies and procedures to implement this mission and commitment. The processes of education, review and monitoring described in the HRPP serve to ensure the safe and ethical conduct of research that will protect human subjects in an atmosphere of mutual trust and integrity in the pursuit of knowledge and human benefit (Section 3-1: Michigan State University Human Research Protection Program Plan, MSU Human Research Protection Manual).

MSU’s Institutional Review Boards (IRBs)

Federal Wide Assurance and IRB Registration Numbers
As required by the federal government for institutions engaged in human subjects research that is supported by any agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Michigan State University has an approved assurance of compliance with DHHS regulations (45 CFR 46.103) for the protection of human subjects with the federal Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP).
Michigan State University’s Federal-Wide Assurance of Protection for Human Subjects (FWA-00004556) states that all of its activities related to human subject research, regardless of funding source, will be guided by the ethical principles found in the Belmont Report, will comply with the OHRP Terms of the Federal-Wide Assurance for Protection of Human Subjects for Institutions within the United States, and with regulations set forth in 45 CFR 46 and all of its subparts (A,B,C,D).
