- Save the Date! Fall IRB Conference - October 28, 2005
"Ethical Dilemmas in Human Subject Research" is theme of the one-day conference that will be held in the Union Building at Michigan State University on Friday, October 28, 2005 from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Additional information on speakers, workshops and registration will be posted when finalized. Investigators, faculty, research staff, students, IRB members, IRB staff and any other interested parties are invited to attend.
- Human Research Protection Manual
A comprehensive Human Research Protection (HRP) Manual that includes policies and procedures for UCRIHS and CRIRB is now available online at http://www.humanresearch.msu.edu/regs/hrp_manual_index.htm. The manual, drafted in 2004 as a direct result of the AAHRPP accreditation process, provides unified, detailed information in an easily accessible format for the MSU community. The HRP Manual received extensive review by IRB members and staff, the University Research Council, the University Graduate Council and the Office of MSU's General Counsel before final approval by Dr. Ian Gray, Vice President of Research and Graduate Studies.
Currently under development is a handout for distribution to the MSU community that will highlight the major changes or updates to former UCRIHS and CRIRB policies and procedures.
- Exempt Research
An ad hoc committee that represented faculty, administration, IRB members and staff, and legal counsel developed a revised policy for determining and managing Exempt human subject research. The revised policy requires submission of an application to the IRB, but allows the IRB staff and/or IRB chair to make a determination of Exempt status and issue a determination letter without review and approval by the IRB. The new policy is currently being applied to all new initial applications. Application of this policy for renewal applications will be phased in shortly. Education in the ethical principles of human subject research is required for investigators and their research staff. For details, see Section 8-1, "Exemptions" of the new HRP Manual at http://www.humanresearch.msu.edu/regs/hrp_manual_index.htm - Section08.
