investment? Please join
us at the upcoming IRB Seminar, titled "Data Collection & Storage: How
to Protect Subjects’ Privacy & Researchers’ Investment,"
that will address this question. The
speaker, David Gift, M.S., S.M., Vice

Enhancement of the IRB Office Phone
System
I
am excited to announce the upcoming
enhancement of the IRB office’s phone system. Added features will include direct phone access to
individual IRB staff members with the push of a button, either using the staff
directory or through extension numbers, which will be posted to the human
research web site. Individual voicemail boxes will also be added, providing callers with
the ability to leave voice mail messages for individual staff members
twenty-four hours a day. In addition,
callers will still be
able to access a “live” operator during business hours, if needed.
This
enhanced phone system should be available to callers by March 27, 2007.

Seminar, “Using the Internet to Collect Data:
Unique Consent, Privacy & Confidentiality Issues that May Affect Your
Research,” Nora Rifon,
Ph.D., Professor, Advertising, Public Relations & Retailing,
MSU. Do individuals have an
expectation of privacy when posting personal information to blogs or social
groups on the internet? Do researchers need to obtain consent from these
individuals to use the postings for research? If the information is publicly
available, does it need to be reviewed by the IRB? This session will address
these questions and the ethical implications that they raise.
