"Enhancing communication between the IRBs at MSU and Researchers"

MSU IRB NEWS

Michigan State University has purchased a license that allows unlimited institutional access to the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI), a modular online Course in the Protection of Human Research Subjects administered by the University of Miami, FL. This online training program is used by academic institutions across the United States. We believe that use of this course will provide more flexibility, selection and specialization of IRB educational training requirements for MSU faculty, staff and students. There are 29 different online modules, with 12 basic Biomedical Research modules, 11 basic Social / Behavioral modules and 6 general modules.  Topics include research with vulnerable populations, international research and conflict of interest.

At this time, use of the CITI modules will be used only for renewal of IRB educational training requirements.  Instead of repeating the same MSU IRB Tutorial on an annual basis, as was required in the past, individuals will complete any 6 CITI modules within two years of the initial training.  If you have already taken the initial IRB tutorial, your training expiration date will be extended for one additional year. The estimated time required to complete each module is 15 – 20 minutes, with a total estimated time of one and a half hours over a two year period. On the date of training expiration, if the six modules have been completed, training will be renewed for two additional years.

Instructors and advisors, please note that the CITI license includes unlimited institutional access, so this course can be taken by any MSU individual interested in human subject research, or may be used in whole or part for any MSU academic courses.  Training in human research protection should be an important part of research training for students and staff and we offer CITI and other programs to assist in that education.

Using the CITI training allows faculty, staff and students to complete modules that they are interested in and are pertinent to the type of research that they conduct.    MSU is also in the process of developing MSU-specific modules to be made available through the MSU CITI course.  Please feel free to submit any topic suggestions to Kristen Burt, by phone: (517) 432-4500 or by email: IRBEducation@ores.msu.edu .

Instructions for accessing the CITI web site can be found at http://www.humanresearch.msu.edu/training/training_index.htm.

Thanks for your help and support in the protection of human subjects,

Peter
