SESSIONS
The agenda
for the 2006 Fall IRB Educational Conference includes a plenary
morning session and afternoon breakout sessions. During the morning
plenary session, keynote speaker Bernard Schwetz, DVM, PhD, Director of the
federal Office for Human Research Protections, U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services, will give his presentation. In the afternoon, participants
will have a choice of breakout sessions to attend.
Breakout
Session 1
IRB
Basics 1
This
workshop, designed for new IRB members, provides an introduction to human
subjects’ research protections including a historical perspective and an
overview of the regulations.
Protecting
Subjects’ Information and Researchers’ Data
How
do you store data electronically in a way that protects research subjects’
privacy and the researchers’ investment? This session’s speaker will address
this question, highlighting issues, best practices, and recommendations, such as
encryption, password protection, use of laptops, home computers, and jump
drives, and storing data on a server.
Recent
OHRP Compliance Letters: What Can We Learn?
This
session provides an overview of recent OHRP compliance determination letters,
with an emphasis on lessons that can be learned.
Research
and Internet Privacy: Hot Topic
Do
individuals have an expectation of privacy when posting personal information to
blogs or social groups on the internet? Do researchers need to obtain consent
from these individuals to use the postings for research? If the information is
publicly available, does it need to be reviewed by the IRB? This session will
address these questions and the ethical implications that they raise.
Breakout
Session 2
HIPAA
Updates
This
session will discuss the new HIPAA Security Standards, other relevant HIPAA
issues, and how they may affect researchers.
IRB Basics 2
This
session is a continuation of IRB Basics 1 and includes techniques for completing
project review and a mock review by participants.
Online
Research: Contemporary Issues and IRB
Considerations
Use
of online surveys and databases by researchers continues to grow in
popularity. Contemporary issues unique to this method of data collection
have arisen. Speakers will discuss examples of issues faced by researchers, and
IRB considerations, such as consent and confidentiality, for this type of
research.
The
Regulatory Perspective on High Tech IRB Issues
This
session will address high tech issues facing IRBs, such as electronic
signatures, paper vs. electronic IRB files, online survey research, privacy and
research on internet postings, and ways to incorporate technology into IRB
reviews.
