All individuals involved in a human subject research project who have contact with human subjects or their identifiable data must have current human research protection training. Current human research protection training consists of completing an initial educational requirement and renewing the educational requirement prior to the training expiration date. Initial Educational Requirement
Completion of the MSU IRB tutorial for initial training is required and is valid for two years. Please note that if you have previously completed the MSU IRB Tutorial, you will need to renew your training by completing the CITI requirement (see “To Renew the Educational Requirement” below). You will not receive credit for completing the MSU IRB Tutorial again.

Before beginning the MSU IRB Tutorial (initial training requirement), please read the instructions below.

  1. Click on the “MSU IRB Tutorial” link
  2. Click “Continue to Investigator Screen”
  3. Log In
    1. If you have not registered with the MSU IRB Online System:
      1. Click the “I’m New” link (towards the bottom of the page)
      2. Enter all required information and click “Add Investigator”
      3. Click on the link “online IRB Tutorial” to start the tutorial
    2. If you have already registered with the MSU IRB Online System:
      1. Enter your investigator ID# (i.e., A-PID, Z-PID, Guest ID) and click “Start Search”
      2. Under the “Investigator Training and Contact Information” header, click on “Go to the IRB Tutorial” link
      3. Click “Begin Tutorial” to start the tutorial

To Renew the Educational Requirement
Training must be renewed prior to your training expiration date. To renew training, individuals are required to complete any six CITI, Course in the Protection of Human Research Subject, online modules. Please note that the CITI modules are used to renew the IRB educational requirement, and completion of these modules does not satisfy the IRB initial educational requirement. The initial IRB educational requirement is completion of the online MSU IRB tutorial (see “Initial Educational Requirement” above).

Before beginning the CITI modules (required to renew training requirement), please read the instructions below.

  1. Go to https://www.citiprogram.org to access CITI, an online Course in the Protection of Human Research Subjects
  2. Click on the “Register Here” link
  3. Under the “Participating Institutions” drop-down menu, select “Michigan State University (MSU)” and click “Submit”
  4. Create a username and password and click “Submit”
  5. Enter the requested information (i.e., first name, last name, etc.) and click “Submit”
  6. Enter the requested information (i.e., contact information, etc.) and click “Submit”
  7. Click on the link "Continue to Question 1 at this time"
  8. Select “Group 1MSU Investigators who are required to renew their Human Subjects Protection Training. You are required to complete the introduction, the MSU Module and any 6 additional modules appropriate to your work and interests.” and click “Continue”
  9. For the question "Also a VA member?", select “No”
  10. To access the modules, under "My Courses," click the "Enter" link 
  11. Complete the Introduction and the MSU Module
  12. Select and complete any 6 CITI modules (please note that an 80% cumulative score on the quizzes is needed for completion)
