Title Research Involving Vulnerable Populations: IRB Considerations

Who Should Attend Anyone involved in human subject research, including faculty, students, staff, research administrators, IRB members and IRB staff.
Agenda 12:30 P.M. Conference Check In
1:00 P.M. Welcome and Introduction
1:15 P.M. Regulatory Requirements
When research involves potentially vulnerable populations, additional regulations and considerations may apply. This session will provide an overview of the general requirements, and will highlight Subparts B (research with prisoners), Subpart C (research with pregnant women) and Subpart D (research involving children).
2:00 P.M. Individuals with Diminished Capacity
There are special IRB considerations when research involves individuals with diminished decisional capacity. This session will provide an overview of these considerations, including assessment of capacity, use of a legally authorized individual, and assent procedures for the research subjects.
3:00 P.M. Students as a Vulnerable Population Part I:
FERPA and Student Records
This session will provide an introduction to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and will discuss how this federal law relates to research. FERPA’s application to accessing student records at MSU will also be discussed.
3:30 P.M. Students as a Vulnerable Population Part II:
Overview of IRB Considerations
Regardless of whether research is being conducted on undergraduate students, medical students or graduate students, there are special IRB considerations when the professor or instructor is also the researcher.  This session will include a discussion of these IRB considerations, as well as ways to address potential concerns.
