Peter Vasilenko, PhD Director of Human Research Protection Program Phone: 517-355-2180 ext. 239 Email: irbchair@ores.msu.edu Chair, CRIRB, SIRB, BIRB Office: 205 Olds Hall Peter joined the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) in April of 2003. In addition to his administrative activities, he is a Professor and researcher in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the College of Human Medicine. Peter received his BS in Biology from Muhlenberg College and his PhD in Reproductive Physiology from Kent State University. Peter post-doc-ed at Case Western Reserve University – School of Medicine at which time he was also awarded a Lalor Post-doctoral Fellowship. Peter’s research career has included both animal and clinical research and he has been studying infant mortality and related issues in Michigan since 1989.
Ryan Adams, MS IRB Administrative Assistant Phone: 517-355-2180 ext. 248 Email: adamsrya@ora.msu.edu Office: 205 Olds Hall Ryan joined the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) as a case manager in January of 2008. He has a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree from Central Michigan University and a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology from Michigan State University. In the fall of 2008 he will begin doctoral studies in the HALE program. As an administrative assistant for the HRPP, Ryan manages applications for the Social Science/Behavioral/Education Institutional Review Board (SIRB).
Karalyn Burt, BA, CIM IRB Administrator Phone: 517-355-2180 ext. 228 Email: burtkara@ora.msu.edu Office: 201 Olds Hall Kara has worked for the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) since 2001. She worked as a student employee to the office from 2001-2005. In 2005, Karalyn received a BA in psychology from Michigan State University and joined the HRPP as a full time IRB administrative assistant. In addition, she is a certified IRB Manager (CIM) through the National Association of IRB Managers. Karalyn now acts as the administrator of the Social Science/Behavioral/Education Institutional Review Board (SIRB) and manages SIRB applications. She is also currently attending the Master of Labor Relations and Human Resources program at MSU.
Barbara Decker, BA, CIM, CIP IRB Administrator Phone: 517-355-2180 ext. 229 Email:bdecker@ora.msu.edu Office: 205 Olds Hall Barb has worked for the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) since 1995 and received a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University in Urban Studies. In addition, she is a Certified IRB Manager (CIM) through the National Association of IRB Managers as well as a Certified IRB Professional (CIP) through the Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R). Barb acts as the administrator of the Community Research Institutional Review Board (CRIRB). She manages all of the CRIRB applications but also manages the Biomedical and Health Institutional Review board applications.

She recently joined the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) staff in December of 2006. She is responsible for providing administrative support to the Director of HRPP. Currently, she is attending Spring Arbor University and will graduate with a BA of Business in December 2008.
Rebecca Gore, BA, MS IRB Administrative Assistant Phone: 517-355-2180 ext. 227 Email:gorer@ora.msu.edu Office: 202 Olds Hall Becky recently joined the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) as a case manager in October of 2006. She has a masters of science degree in Entomology and a bachelor of arts degree from James Madison College at MSU. She had been on campus as either a student or worker since 1973. She comes to the IRB from the Entomology Department where she worked as a Research Assistant. As an administrative assistant for the HRPP, Becky manages applications for the Social Science/Behavioral/Education Institutional Review Board (SIRB).
Judy McMillan, BS, CIP IRB Administrator Phone: 517-355-2180 ext. 230 Email: mcmill12@ora.msu.edu Office: 205 Olds Hall Judy joined the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) in December of 2002. Judy received her bachelors of science degree in Math and Natural Science and joined the university in January of 1988. In addition, she is a Certified IRB Professional (CIP) through the Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R). Judy acts as the administrator of the Biomedical and Health Institutional Review Board (BIRB) and manages BIRB applications.
Steven Smith, BA, MBA, CIM IRB Administrative Assistant Phone: 517-355-2180 ext. 236 Email: smiths87@ora.msu.edu Office: 201 Olds Hall Steven Smith has been employed by Michigan State University for over ten years. He recently joined the staff of the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) in 2005. Steven has a BA in Biology and minor in Chemistry. Another accomplishment of Steven’s was earning his MBA in 2002. In addition, he is a certified IRB Manager (CIM) through the National Association of IRB Managers. As an administrative assistant for the HRPP, Steven manages applications for the Social Science/Behavioral/Education Institutional Review Board (SIRB).

Kristen Burt, BS, BA Education Program Coordinator Phone: 517-355-2180 ext. 235 Email: IRBEducation@ora.msu.edu or burtkris@ora.msu.edu Office: 107 Olds Hall Kristen Burt first joined the IRB office in 2001 as a student worker. She worked in that capacity until her graduation from MSU in May 2003 with a B.A. in General Business Administration Pre-Law, and a B.S. in Human Biology. After graduation, she was hired on full-time working as a case manager, and then assisting with the accreditation process to the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP). In November of 2004, Kristen was hired as the Education Program Coordinator for the Office of Research Ethics and Standards, now the Office of Regulatory Affairs. As part of her role as education program coordinator, Kristen works with the human research protection programs assisting in the development and conduct of education and training activities. She is also attending the MSU College of Law in the Juris Doctor program
